Publishing Smart: How to Make Your Article Visible

Authors want their scholarly articles to be seen, cited and utilized. This class provides opportunities for researchers to increase their visibility by exploring various publishing and archiving choices. Tools for evaluating journal impact factors, online usage, local online availability, retaining copyrights, and submission to online archives are covered. These tools include ISI's Journal Citation Report, University of Utah online usage reports, Science Commons' Scholar's Copyright Addendum Engine, the NIH Manuscript Submission System / PubMed Central, and submission to the University of Utah Institutional Repository (IR). Come discover these tools and maximize your scholarly impact.

The class provides critical background information. This includes an update on issues in scholarly publishing at the local, national, and international level, the identification and evaluation of journals which will maximize exposure to scholarly works, identification of trends and new models in Open Access publishing, archiving, and funding. In addition, tools to assist authors will be introduced.

The class is a "hands-on" experience utilizing these tools. For example, searching for journal impact factors, performing citation analysis for individual papers, using the Science Commons' Scholar's Copyright Addendum Engine and submitting manuscripts to PubMed Central and the University of Utah Institutional Repository (IR).
